Six-Step Project Experience - Home Builders And Trades

At Boston Automations, we collaborate directly with custom home builders, electricians, HVAC contractors, and other trades to integrate technology systems into the construction process efficiently, accurately, and with minimal friction. Our proven six-step workflow keeps your project on track and ensures seamless coordination between all teams.

Here’s what to expect at each step—and what we’ll need from you to keep everything running smoothly.

01

Discovery & Onboarding

We begin with a collaborative meeting between your team, Boston Automations, and the homeowner (if applicable) to align on the project’s scope, design intent, and schedule. Early coordination eliminates surprises and allows us to build a tight scope that integrates cleanly into your process.

What happens in this step:

  • We review architectural plans and discuss the scope of low-voltage systems
  • We identify key integration points with other trades (electrical, HVAC, lighting, etc.)
  • We outline deliverables, lead times, and communication protocols

Design & Engineering

Our engineering team produces detailed system documentation including floor plans, riser diagrams, and wiring schematics. These plans are reviewed with your team and coordinated with architectural, electrical, and mechanical drawings to avoid scope overlaps and field confusion.

What happens in this step:

We generate engineered drawings and device schedules

We coordinate with you and your subs (especially electrical and HVAC)

We finalize technology selections and budge

Review and sign off on low-voltage plans

Confirm coordination with electrician, HVAC, and other trades

Provide updated architectural or MEP revisions as applicable

03

Pre-Wire / Rough-In

This is the critical infrastructure phase. We run all structured wiring for AV, networking, security, access control, and lighting systems—timed precisely with other rough-in activities to minimize conflict. We’ll be on site coordinating closely with your field teams.

What happens in this step:

  • We pull all low-voltage cabling and mark device locations
  • We interface with other trades on-site to avoid conflicts
  • We update drawings as field conditions evolve

Trim Phase

After drywall is complete, we return to install the visible components: keypads, speaker grilles, wall plates, and network devices. We double-check placement and alignment with cabinetry, tile, and millwork, working around your finishing schedule.

What happens in this step:

We install and test field hardware: touchscreens, speakers, etc.

We verify locations with the builder/homeowner on site

We update system documentation with serial numbers and install notes

Confirm drywall, painting, and cabinetry are complete in each area

Coordinate access for trim installation (especially ceiling devices)

Approve device locations and finish selections (with client if applicable)

Finish & Commissioning

With all hardware in place, we program, test, and commission the full system. We walk the space with your team and the homeowner to review functionality, make any necessary adjustments, and ensure the technology performs as expected before handoff.

What happens in this step:

  • We program control systems, test each device, and calibrate AV
  • We complete a walkthrough with the builder and client
  • We fine-tune system performance and document final settings

Ongoing Support & Service

Even after the project wraps, Boston Automations stays involved. We offer ongoing support, remote monitoring, and future upgrade options. You and your client will have access to responsive service for any future needs, updates, or expansions.

What happens in this step:

We deliver as-built system documentation and training resources

We provide service plans and remote support options

We remain available for add-ons, updates, or warranty calls

Receive final documentation package for your records

Share service contact info with the homeowner

Inform us of future phases or renovation plans
