Shades for water views

Plenty of homes on Aquidneck Island and in Jamestown have big windows facing the water, and the glare off the bay can be strong. We group the shades by side of the house and set them to follow the sun through the day and the seasons. You keep the view in the morning and lose the glare in the afternoon without touching a button.

The fabric matters too, because a more open weave keeps more of the view and a tighter weave gives more privacy and shade. We choose it room by room with you.

Lighting for a house you leave

A lot of Newport County homes sit empty for part of the year. Lutron can run the lights on a schedule while you're away so the house looks lived in. From your phone you can check which lights are on, lower the shades before a storm or turn on the porch lights before you arrive.

Older Newport homes

Newport has colonial houses, Victorian cottages and Gilded Age estates, and their plaster and trim are worth protecting. Wireless RadioRA dimmers and battery-powered Triathlon shades add control without cutting into finished walls.

When a restoration opens the walls, HomeWorks with pocketed Sivoia QS or Palladiom shades is usually the better choice. We plan it with your architect from the start so keypads and shade pockets fit the period details.

Lutron systems we install

We install HomeWorks for whole-home control, RadioRA for renovations and Caseta for a cottage or a few rooms. We also install Ketra lighting, Palladiom and Sunnata keypads, and Palladiom, Sivoia QS and Triathlon shades with Lutron drapery track. Our Lutron lighting and shade installation page explains each system in more detail.

Lutron projects in Rhode Island

Our Little Compton project is a Newport County home with a main house, a guest house, outdoor living areas and a basement. Lutron lighting and shading runs through a Control4 system, with Sonance IS8 invisible speakers and pre-wiring in place for future upgrades.

Across the bay, our oceanfront project in Narragansett runs on a Lutron HomeWorks system with Palladiom shades. That home led to our Lutron Hall of Fame induction and received a CE Pro Home of the Year Award.

You can see more finished homes in our project portfolio.

Where we work

We install Lutron in Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth and Jamestown and across the rest of Aquidneck Island. Off the island, we also work in Little Compton, which is part of Newport County, and in Narragansett and other coastal Rhode Island towns.

Common questions

Is there an authorized Lutron dealer in Newport RI?

Yes, Boston Automations is an authorized Lutron dealer serving Newport County, including Newport, Middletown, Portsmouth and Jamestown. Lutron inducted us into its Hall of Fame in 2024 for an oceanfront home in Narragansett.

Can Lutron shades cut glare from the water?

Yes, and that's one of the main reasons waterfront owners add them. We set each group of shades to follow the sun on its side of the house and pick the fabric room by room, so you cut the glare and keep the view.

Can I control my lights and shades when I'm not at the house?

Yes, the Lutron app lets you check and change lights and shades from anywhere. You can also set schedules so the house looks lived in while you're away.

Can you add Lutron to a historic house in Newport?

In most cases we can, because wireless RadioRA dimmers replace existing switches and battery-powered Triathlon shades mount at the window. Plaster and trim stay intact. If the walls are open for a restoration, we'll plan a wired HomeWorks system instead.
