The home and the goal
The owners built a new main house and guest house on their land in Little Compton. They wanted guests to be comfortable without a lesson, lights and shades that look after themselves, music inside and out, and the ability to check on everything from away.

The hard part
We joined while the house was still on paper and worked from the construction drawings in 2020. Rough wiring went in during 2021, so every keypad, shade, speaker and access point had a place before the walls closed. Running the two buildings and the grounds as one system meant planning the network and wiring between buildings from the start.
The result
Lutron HomeWorks QSX runs the lighting and shades in both houses. Sonance IS8 invisible speakers play music in the main rooms without a grille in sight. Control4 ties lighting, shades, music, TV and climate together, and the guest house has its own simple keypads. We pre-wired for future upgrades so the owners can add without opening walls.

Yes. With a network link between buildings, both run from the same app while each keeps its own keypads.
As early as possible. Working from the construction drawings means every device has a planned place and wire before the walls close.
