Landscape and outdoor lighting in Newport, RI

Boston Automations designs and installs landscape and outdoor lighting in Newport, RI and across Newport County. We light the drive, the paths, the trees and the front of the house so the property looks good at night and you can see where you're walking.

What we light

Most outdoor lighting plans start with safety: the drive, the front steps, the paths and the doors. Then we add what makes the property look its best at night, like the face of the house, the big trees, the stone walls and the gardens.

On the water side we light the patio, the pool, the steps down to the lawn and the dock. We keep the light low and warm so it doesn't wash out the view of the water or bother the neighbors.

Salt air

Newport's weather is hard on outdoor lighting. This is how we plan for it.

Fixtures made for coastal use, which hold their finish near the water instead of corroding in a few seasons.

Low-voltage wiring buried along the beds and paths, with sealed connections at every fixture.

Transformers mounted where they stay dry and easy to service.

Warm LED lamps that use little power and last for years.

A plan on paper showing every fixture, so you can see the result before we dig.

Timers and lighting control

Outdoor lights should come on at dusk and go off late at night without anyone touching a switch. We set them on an astronomic schedule that follows sunset through the year.

Tied into a Lutron or smart home system, the outdoor lights also join scenes. One button lights the path to the car, and a security scene turns on every outdoor light at once. If the house sits empty for the season, the lights still run on schedule so it looks lived in.

Working with your landscaper

The best time to plan lighting is while the beds and paths are being laid out. We work from your landscape plan, run conduit under new walkways and patios before they're set, and leave a little extra cable at each fixture so lights can move as the plants grow.

If the landscaping is already done, we walk the property at dusk with you to decide what to light and what to leave dark.

Outdoor lighting we've installed

At a waterfront home in Portsmouth, we designed and installed landscape lighting with low-voltage bollards along the paths, lighting the house for looks and for safety.

Our oceanfront home in Narragansett pairs outdoor lighting with a covered patio that has motorized screens, heaters and an outdoor TV.

Common questions

Do you install landscape lighting in Newport, RI?

Yes. We design and install landscape and outdoor lighting in Newport and across Newport County, from a few path lights to a full plan for the house, the grounds and the dock.

What outdoor lighting lasts near the ocean?

Fixtures made for coastal use, with sealed low-voltage connections, last the longest in salt air. We keep the transformers somewhere dry where they're easy to reach.

Can the outdoor lights turn on by themselves?

Yes. We set them to follow sunset through the year, and with a Lutron or smart home system you can also run them from your phone or a keypad.

Can you add lighting to a yard that's already landscaped?

Yes. Low-voltage cable can go in along the edges of beds and paths with very little digging, and we plan the runs to avoid roots and irrigation.

Do you light docks and seawalls?

Yes. We light docks, steps, paths and seawalls so people can walk safely at night, and we aim the light down so it doesn't glare across the water.
